South Yorkshire Woodfuel

Funding Support

Modern woodfuel heating systems and the supply of woodchip from local sources are now well established in many parts of Europe, the industry is still in its infancy in this country and there has been an un-focused approach to wood-energy and renewables in general.

Details of some of the funding that is available click here. The South Yorkshire experience has shown that ever avenue and opportunity for funding should be explored - utilising your partners and your own contacts to explore all possibilities.

Yorkshire Forward, the Regional Development Agency and the EU funded Objective 1 programme, recognised that the development of the woodfuel sector would help to meet carbon-reduction targets and develop local businesses. They are both actively supporting the development of the woodfuel sector in South Yorkshire and have made grants available for the following targeted projects. These projects have demonstrated that they filled a strategic role in helping to kick-start the woodfuel industry in the region.

  • Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) received £36,228 in support from the Objective1 funded Forestry Resources Grant (FRG) through the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership (SYFP). This help with the installation of the first wood chip fired boiler to be commissioned in South Yorkshire at RSPB - Old Moor Wetlands Centre.
  • Barnsley MBC have received support from Yorkshire Forward (YF) and from the FRG through SYFP, to run a year long series of trials which demonstrated that wood pellets can be successfully used instead of coal in underfed solid fuel boilers.
  • Barnsley MBC & Sheffield CC both received funding via SYFP from YF for capital projects including the installation of wood fuel boilers at 3 sites totalling 1.5 MW of biomass heat generation.
  • Yorkshire Forward also supported in a phased 'Pathfinder' programme, which has made grants available for the purchase of essential woodfuel processing equipment, and storage facilities for woodchip. £420,000 was awarded to South Yorkshire Forest Partnership/Sheffield City Council to develop the activity and to purchase a wood chipping machine, and handling equipment. The equipment has been contracted to Silvapower Ltd, enabling the local production of quality wood chip for fuel, to supply boiler installations in the region.

Further funding is being sought by South Yorkshire Forest Partnership in order to extend the 'Pathfinder' projects into other areas in the region. The 'SY Wood Cluster' needs to develop a critical mass of generation capacity, so that the number of boilers installed in the region are sufficient to support the woodfuel supply infrastructure that is being developed.
